My wildlife career started in 1990 at the age of 14 and nowadays it is more or less my way to live. Besides being a keen birdwatcher, I am a rewarded bird and nature photographer. I have scored three top-ten placings in the British Birds Bird Photograph of the Year (2. and 7. in 2007 and 5. in 2012) and been Honourable mentioned in the HBW World Bird Photo Contest 2012. I also have written several papers and identification articles for journals, magazines and books.

My work as a bird survey specialist allows me to enjoy birds and nature in both, work and free time. Before the survey work I worked as a bird and wildlife guide for more than a decade. I still do guiding every now and then in Finland and Norway. As a new destination I lead birding tours to Northern India.

I have always used Canon camera equipment and now use an EOS 7D, along with Canon 300mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens (plus converters) as the main “tool”. Other lenses are Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM and Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS.

I live in Haukipudas, near Oulu, Western Finland with my wife Marja and our dog Tytti. We often go out to the nature together. Fortunately we don’t always need to go very far, just out of the door is enough! We have a large garden with a birding tower standing in the corner, naturally producing a long garden bird list.
